Cockroach control in Salt Lake City, UT

Roaches scattering when the kitchen light comes on is not a one-spray problem. German cockroaches need a bait and growth regulator program; oriental roaches need the drains and damp spots dealt with.

Quick answer

Cockroach control in Salt Lake City starts with the species. German cockroaches, the main kitchen roach in Utah, live around sinks, appliances and furnaces and need gel baits plus a growth regulator over two or three visits. Oriental cockroaches come up from floor drains and damp basements, so treatment focuses on drains, moisture and entry points. Seeing roaches in daylight means the population is already large.

Overview

Two roaches, two different problems

Most cockroach calls in the Salt Lake area involve one of two species. German cockroaches are small, tan and live indoors, packed into warm, moist gaps near food: hinges, the back of the fridge, the dishwasher, the stove and the furnace. They breed quickly and ride in on grocery boxes, used appliances and moving boxes.

Oriental cockroaches are larger, darker and slower. They live in drains, crawlspaces and damp basements, and they show up in laundry rooms and bathrooms, especially in older homes. They don't spread through a kitchen the way German roaches do, but they keep coming back until the drains and moisture are handled.

That's why the first job is identifying which one you have. German cockroach work is a bait and growth regulator program with follow-ups. Oriental cockroach work is drains, moisture, door sweeps and a perimeter treatment.

How the visit goes

How a cockroach treatment goes

  1. Identify and map

We confirm the species and check hinges, appliances, sinks, drains and the furnace room to find where they harbor.

  2. Bait the harborage

Small gel bait placements go into cracks and hinges where roaches live, not on open counters.

  3. Add a growth regulator

An insect growth regulator stops young roaches from maturing and breeding.

  4. Handle drains and entry points

For oriental roaches: drains, crawlspace moisture, door sweeps and a foundation treatment.

  5. Follow up

A return visit in a couple of weeks to check monitors, refresh bait and treat any new spots.

What it covers

The cockroach work we do

German cockroaches in kitchens

Gel baits and growth regulators placed in hinges, appliance voids and under sinks, with monitors to track progress.

Oriental cockroaches in basements and drains

Drain treatment, moisture fixes, door sweeps and a foundation barrier for the larger dark roaches.

Gel bait and growth regulator programs

Multi-visit programs that break the breeding cycle instead of chasing adults.

Apartment unit treatments

Unit-by-unit work in multi-unit buildings, including the units next door where roaches often spread.

Salt Lake conditions

Why roaches hang on in Salt Lake kitchens and apartments

USU Extension lists the German cockroach as the primary kitchen-infesting roach in Utah, favoring warm, moist spots near food like sinks, appliances and furnaces, and it can trigger allergic reactions and asthma symptoms. Housing matters too: about 20 percent of Salt Lake City's housing units sit in buildings of 50 or more units, where roaches move between apartments through shared walls, plumbing chases and trash rooms. Treating one unit while the neighbors are infested rarely holds.

In apartment buildings we ask managers about neighboring units and trash areas before the first visit, because the plan has to cover where the roaches are actually coming from.

Timing

How long cockroach control takes

  1. First few daysRoaches feed on bait and die off; you may see more of them out for a short time.
  2. Two weeksThe follow-up visit checks monitors and treats any remaining harborage.
  3. Four to six weeksGrowth regulators and repeat baiting break the breeding cycle.
  4. After thatMonitors stay in place so a small return can be caught early.
