Quick answer
Clover mites are tiny red mites, about the size of a period, that live in lawns and crawl up sunny walls into homes in spring and fall, often by the thousands. They don't bite and aren't a health threat, but they leave red stains when crushed. Control means treating the foundation, the base of the walls and the lawn edge, and creating a grass-free strip along the house.

Overview
Why they're on your windowsill
Clover mites feed on grass and clover, and they're most common in lush, well-fertilized lawns that run right up to the house. In spring, they climb the sunny walls, especially south and west, and slip in around windows and doors.
Once inside they don't breed or feed, and they die off in days. The problem is numbers: hundreds or thousands at a time on sills and window frames, and red smears when anyone tries to wipe them up.
The most effective fix is at the lawn edge. A treatment along the foundation and wall base, plus a strip of gravel or bare soil between the grass and the house, cuts off their route.

Salt Lake conditions
Clover mites in Utah lawns
USU Extension describes clover mites as about the size of a period, living mainly in turfgrass and migrating indoors in late spring and fall, often up exterior walls and through windows in the hundreds or thousands. They stain fabric when smashed but aren't a health threat. The recommended fix is a turf- and weed-free strip 3 to 5 feet wide around the building, which in a typical Salt Lake yard means pulling the lawn back from the foundation.
Newly sodded lawns that run right up to the siding are the most common setup we see.
