Local knowledge

Bench, valley and fields

Layton is Davis County's largest city, stretching from benches below the Wasatch on the east to newer subdivisions and fields on the west. Established neighborhoods have mature maples, box elders and sycamores; newer areas have young lawns next to open land.

The trees bring wasps, hornets, boxelder bugs and treehole mosquitoes. The fields bring voles, gophers and field mice. Across the city, window wells and garages let spiders and mice in each fall.

Our Clearfield office is right next door, so Layton calls are among our quickest.

Local conditions

Davis County mosquitoes and old trees

By September 2025, Davis County had recorded 58 West Nile positive mosquito pools. County abatement crews also treat rot holes in maple, box elder and sycamore trees for the western treehole mosquito, which spreads heartworm to dogs, and the district works out of neighboring Kaysville. Layton's older neighborhoods have plenty of those trees, so yard treatments and keeping dogs on heartworm prevention both make sense here.

Newer western subdivisions see more voles and gophers than mosquitoes.
