Local knowledge

New neighborhoods, open land next door

South Jordan has grown fast, with large master-planned communities like Daybreak spreading west toward the Oquirrh foothills. Brand-new lawns and landscaping next to undeveloped land are prime territory for pocket gophers and voles.

Ponds, water features and the Jordan River on the city's east side bring mosquitoes in summer. Newer homes are tighter than older ones, but garages, window wells and utility penetrations still let spiders and mice in.

Our Redwood Road office runs South Jordan routes through the season.

Local conditions

Gophers in new subdivisions, mosquitoes by the river

USU Extension notes that in Utah's urban areas, pocket gopher damage is often greatest in new subdivisions next to undeveloped, weedy land, which describes much of South Jordan's western edge. Gophers mate in February and March, and young are born March to June, so spring is when new mounds show up. On the east side, Utah's first human West Nile case of 2025 was likely infected in late July near the Jordan River in southern Salt Lake County.

Treating gophers early in spring stops a single tunnel system from becoming several.
